Actually, newer cars have a built in program that after so many engine start ups, so many miles, or something else, that light will automatically flash on. The car then has to be told to shut off the light. So if you get an oil change at your servicing, which the light indicated, and the mechanic doesn't "roll the codes" the light will stay on even if there is no problem.
