I second this! The original Little Mermaid story is said to be a love letter from the author to another man who was straight, to represent his unrequited feelings...a gender bent version with a happier ending than the story would be nice!

I think so. He fell in love with another man, and when that guy went to get married and rejected Anderson, the original The Little Mermaid was a thinlyy veiled description of what Anderson went through. The whole mermaid dying in the end and having a mountainous path toward gaining a soul and moving on is said to really be about his broken heart and how difficult it would be to recover. So sad.
