It's neither. The yolk is the food that the chick would be living on, while in the egg. If the egg was fertilized.

A period is an egg (not fertilized) cycling itself out of the body.

Well if you look at the way a human female flushes the uterine lining and egg, purging it each month, it's what the chicken is doing each day...it's just not messy.
