As a farmer, when the crops are looking bad this year

Someone didn't crop the picture correctly,that's why there's white and black backgrounds around the picture of the farmer

Isn't it pretty forced rather? Here it's the verb "to crop", so it's not the crop that looks bad, it's the cropping, no? Not being a native speaker I'm not entirely sure I'm right, but I think I am.
