How exactly did you interpret "reproduce with their offspring" to mean that they don't have sex? Or do I not know hot fish reproduction works??

Not sure if this is correct, but I heard somewhere that the female lays the eggs, and then the male fertilises them or something

Yup. Just like humans. Females have eggs that are basically useless unless fertilized. The female lays them then the male comes along and sprays his shit.
