At our school, last year, since we didn't have enough male actors, we did a gender swapped "Rene and Johnathan." I played Monique. (Mercutio) God that was fun.
We did a version of Macbeth set in a high school and they turned it into a comedy and we knew we were in for a bad time when the title was Macbeth Off-KILTer. It was the worst-written play I've ever read.
The whole point of Shakespeare is that all of his plays are relevant in any time period. Meaning you can set it in any time period you want. It's not like you can set high school musical in feudal japan and get away with it, but you could with romeo and juliett or macbeth or hamlet.
