I read somewhere that if you relate to a story someone told or a situation they are going through to mention you went through something similar, and then usually they ask and so you can talk about it without seeming rude and self centered. I'm really bad about this kinda thing. You do it in hopes to help and end up wondering why people are your friend

I always feel as if it's self centered and I don't talk about myself for this reason

You should find a way to relate, you'd probably and up helping more than hurting..plus people do feel safer talking to someone if they know they relate, and enjoy learning about others :)

Even if I can relate I just feel selfish for taking the attention away from them...I'm weird I'm sorry

You're not weird, you're incredibly thoughtful to take a step back and not mention your own story. No sorries. I was just saying people might appreciate what you do have to say more than they appreciate silence. But sometimes it's really difficult to overcome the feeling of being selfish , so it's understandable all the same. Just remember your words and experiences are just as important and valid as another's, and sometimes it's a little rude to butt in, but sometimes it really helps.
