My team and I once wrote a full research paper, 6 pages (what the professor wanted) with references and figures based on our findings and data obtained from our samples in just 2.5hrs...
We had had all the data for like 2 weeks, but we worked on the paper the day it was due; it was due at 9pm, we started working on it at around 6pm.

Procrastination for the win....
In my case, even though I'm not actively working, I'm still thinking about it as a background/secondary type of thought. So when it comes time to put it down in writing, it's easy since I already know what I want to write and it's all planned out in my mind.
