If she´s blind, why does she have to cover her eyes?

Quite a few blind people I know have patches to cover their eyes anyway. But I think it's because some in the race have slight eyesight, so they have to make it equal but covering their eyes so the fully blind runners don't have a disadvantage. I'm not sure though.
They don't make the blind run only against the blind and there's no "handicapping" in the Paralympics. She can probably see shadows and doesn't want to get distracted.
