Its done to remember an uprising of the Polish resistance against the nazi's in ww2, many civilians lost their lives.

We have something similar in the Netherlands, every 4th of May at 8o clock there is an official 2 minutes of silence in remembrance of those that died in Ww2, and the 5th of May is liberation Day with lots of festivities.

Same is done in israel on their memorial day and holocaust remembrance day.
