Actually, judging by the costumes, architecture, etc of the film, I'd say it took place long after the dark-ages. Most-likely in the 18th century, though it could be long before or after the French Revolution, which lasted about 10 years at the end of the century.

The story was written in 1740, 49 years before the Revolution, so they probably had a long relationship.

Also, they were servants in France. They might be on the side of the proletariat.
