They could have commissioned the photo, or a relative had it colorized later. Look at the plank walls, the ragged edge b&w photos on the coffee table, the elaborate ashtray, the Kraft package wrapping on the side table, the extra wide door casing, the 30's sofa; it all points to 1956.
Here's what I think:
I think they got painted in 1956, hence the picture above them, and then they remembered/immortalized that by taking another picture in the same house decades later.
And the pictures are mislabeled by the year.
