Chemistry major perhaps? It's the reaction between the chlorine and ammonia that produces poisonous gases. There have been accidental deaths due to people mixing household cleaners, not knowing what would happen.

While it is indeed a bad idea to mix bleach with anything nitrogenous (ammonia, urine, fertilizer, etc.) it DOES NOT make mustard gas. It DOES tend to produce toxic compounds but none of them are mustard gas or even anything similar to mustard gas. It is FAR more dangerous to mix bleach with any type of acid (vinegar, some toilet bowl cleaners, lemon juice, even cola) because it results in the release of chlorine gas.

Furthermore, mustard gas is more of an incapacitating agent or an area-denial weapon, not so much than a lethal one. When used in warfare it was only lethal in about 1 percent of those exposed. Also, the name mustard gas is a bit of a misnomer, it is actually a liquid that was typically deployed in the form of a mist.
