Wait what does he mean by recovering is he currently a vegetarian or was he and what's he recovering from, sorry if this sounds stupid I'm just confused.

Well if you are a recovering alcoholic, it means you used to drink a lot of alcohol but have now stopped. A recovering vegetarian would be someone who was a vegetarian but has stopped.
