Trade schools, volunteer work, and/or good references can do just as well for you.
Also, business isn't as far removed from politics as people seem to think.

It's definitely different, but I do agree that running a business provides solid experience with something like running a city, state, or federal government.

There is no requirement for prior service, you must be a US born citizen and 35 or older.
