You should only do it if you're breeding guard dogs. That's the whole reason that ear cutting and tail docking came to be, so that the dog wouldn't suffer torn ears or broken tails, though this was also done in dog fighting. Otherwise you're ruining a perfectly good dog.
It takes a lot more good to outweigh the bad. My rescue pit has done nothing to hurt the people next door or their tiny dogs he even goes as far to lay down so they can reach him. But they still immediately scoop up their dogs as soon as I let mine out.
