chopsticks started out as a way to pick up and move things like dumplings in a pot. think tongs before the invention of springs. but because of how easy and cheap they are to make they became more common at the table as a utensil when Asia's population started to grow as rapidly as it has, which drove up the prices of everyday things such as utensils as more and more people needed them. also asian white rice, or asian sticky rice clumps up into little chunks when cooked properly. making them very easy to eat with chopsticks. sincerely a white person who knows how to use Google.
