Pétain signed a treaty of peace with the nazis. He then became the leader of the Vichy regime, which was half of France, the other half belonging to Germany.
Dude helped Hitler with his jew extermination.
That dictature in France began in 1940 and ended in 1944 thanks to the resistance, led by Charles de Gaulle.
Also, before WWII, both Britain and France hoped that by giving to Hitler what he wanted (thus breaking the treaty of Versaille, which was really really hard to live for the Germans, considered a "diktat"), we would not trigger another war. So they tried to avoid confronting him every time he did something. Though after he invaded Poland, both decided that enough was enough and declared war on the Germans.
But yeah, Britain and France wanted peace really badly, which is concretely a good thing but the way it got handled is catastrophic and led to the events of WWII.
I find this post quite insulting. Poland was not left out to dry. Having alliances with France and the UK, both countries declared war on Germany for the invasion of Poland. Poland was hopelessly stuck between Germany and the Soviet Union and was impossible to save.
However, the Polish armed forces were received (albeit in a rather biased form) by France and the UK. The Polish government-in-exile was run from London, and Polish airmen were equipped with Hurricanes, becoming some of the most effective squadrons in RAF history.
Please remind me of the last time a country honoured an alliance pact through all-out, civilization-crippling war carried out against overwhelming odds and at the cost of millions of lives.
"Fuck you" that's when.
