A helmet saved my life: I was trying one on in the ski shop and some a**hat knocked an entire rack of skis over onto me. The helmet split open instead of my head.

I don't understand what the article is saying...so the guy ducked for a limb and almost got impaled..? what the hell was he doing to have caused that.

He's saying the guy would be dead without the helmet. The helmet absorbed the majority of the blow so he escaped with a nasty poke instead of a hole through his head

In other words, thanks to his helmet he got stitches instead of cremated.
