While you do learn ABCs and such in preschool, my point was more that kids couldn't really make those pronunciations and understand those words at that age.
When I was in preschool, we mostly did counting, basic sounds/parts of the ABCs and shapes. Maybe it's different in your part of the US?

In England, kids start school at 3 - 5. Before that they can go to nurseries, like the one I work at, where they mostly play, but have a bit of learning incorporated into their day
