First of May is far more likely to be correct as there are only around 5 countries worldwide that use mm/dd/yy. The US and parts of Canada are the only major ones at that.

Good point, but typically countries that use month day year also use slashes rather than dots

Could just get around this issue by writing the name of the month...

People debate this all the time... the day, month, year makes sense for some things, but doesn't help with sorting things on a computer, so it should just be dropped completely

Agreed. I'm using yyyy-mm-dd every time I can. Plus it's ISO.
