Trying to not offend anyone is useless when everyone wants to be offended
Like you're walking, doing your own shit and someone just walks into you and starts yelling
And you're just ._. What? What did I do
But it's too late, want it or not, it happens
The problem with this is that you don't know what warrants "offensive" to different people (could be based on real, traumatic, heart breaking experiences). One rape survivor could lean in to rape or sexual insults where as another could not. There's no way of knowing if someone will take it as a joke. I think we should just be KIND and HUMAN to everyone. Kindness can only be taken for what it is- it isn't subjective.
I think the difficulty in communication lies in crossing people's personal level of comfort. People don't always have the courage to be honest about that, and what I think PC-culture should do is create a safer environment, where everyone feels comfortable expressing their needs. It shouldn't work as a standard that everyone has to conform to. In that aspect, it's no different than the toxic patterns from before, because it was very difficult to break those as well.
I think it's important that our society try to be inclusive. I think history tends to move in broad swerves of over corrections with each trend being a reaction to the one before. Right now we're still figuring out how to avoid being sexist, racist, homophobic etc. and moderating speech might not be the best way to do that- but it comes from a place that is moving in the right direction.
