No, I don't think that the writers meant it like that. Did you stick with the career choice you made as a teen? I did not, and I do not live with my parents, I have a house, a car, I pay bills, etc., AND I'm much more satisfied with the career I chose in my 20s. Also, I don't see any mention of a "high paying job" as you mentioned. The career I have now pays far less than the one I started out in, yet my current career is much more satisfying.

Thanks for the correction. I still think you ought to have some idea of what you want to do before you start dropping 10s of thousands on college. No question that people will change as the world opens up...someone may start a job, and then see career paths they didn't know about before. But still, your main "goal" is to not have regrets in your 40s? That seems to set you up for the worst kind of regret....not doing anything vs. starting off on a path and adjusting it as you learn more.

I understand your point, but is it necessary to go to college immediately after high school? Perhaps someone can get a job (not necessarily a career-defining job) first to develop some skills and interests, then make a more informed decision when applying to college.

Please see my last comment right above yours. If that's a possibility for you, then it could be helpful to wait before applying to college.

thanks, that actually makes a lot more sense than just running straight into a course that you don't enjoy and that will define which jobs you must apply for. waiting and making sure you're confident with your choice sounds a lot smarter!
