Do you think that big business has just one employee, the CEO? No, big business employees your neighbors, family and friends. They hire other businesses to do things like clean, landscape, buy office supplies and outsource other jobs. Big business isn't some anonymous entity out to destroy America. It is America. Hell, most small business owners dream of growing their business just like founder of Nike, HP or KFC did. Grow up.

A Big Business CEO has a #much# higher pay ratio compared to his employees than the average local shop owner. Last 40 years CEO payments (in spending power) rised some 1000% compared to 11% for the employees. The big business company does the same amount of work with a lot less employees. Also Big Business is totally some anonymous entity by definition, as it usually belongs to shareholders. How many CEO of big corporations are the owner/inventor? It's usually someone who has proven in other companies he excels at adding to shareholders value. Profit is the main and only purpose of a Big Business company, as opposed to most local businesses being integral parts of their communities. Maybe you should grow up and realize all the nice and friendly self-portrayals of Big Business company are just advertising.
@diyrogue got an example for that $5 vs $25 service or product?
@halfdeadhammerhead, my last two vacations when I've gone to get stuff from small mom and pop stores the prices were significanttly higher. The only one coming to my mind right now though are the sun catchers. I can by a suncatcher for like $5-10 depending on the intricacy and it'll actually seem like a real gem but I went to a small shop that had a big selection and their lowest priced one was $20 for an obviously plastic one on a string. They went as high as $45 of they had smaller kids craft rhinestones on them.

Art or objects of beauty are not as easy to compare as most other goods, so you can expect a wider price range. A 1:5 ratio will not happen on goods that are easier to compare in actual value.
I went way out of my way to try to get something at a local lock store. I showed up half an hour before the posted closing time just in time to see the last employee leaving early. So I had to wait till the next day to buy what I needed at a big box store. Another time I wanted to buy meat from the local family owned butcher type shop but their business was slow so the meat wasn't as fresh as the grocery store. The local hardware store used to provide expert advice with their hardware, but the knowledgeable people are gone, leaving people who don't know anything and don't want to quit talking to each other to help a customer. Why should I pay more for worse product or worse service? Want people to buy from your local store? Provide something that the chain stores can't.
