If they were basing it on algebra, the second one is right. If it is based on chemistry and chemical compounds, the first would be correct right?

In chemistry I believe it should be a subscript, so below the letter, indicating that there are two C atoms, instead of a superscript

Same thing, either way you are affecting only the last c (same with thic^2 btw, the only way to get thicthic would be (thic)^2)
(Also you did an extra c in your comment, you'd be getting thiccc)
