The huge companies control the connections, though. I'm not saying I agree with letting them do whatever they want, just that the companies, for the most part, created and maintain the connections to the internet.

Actually in most places the infrastructure is directly or indirectly paid from taxes. Which these kind of companies try to avoid to pay whenever possible.
