The Japanese used kamakaze pilots in WWII to combat allied ships. The planes became the first smart bombs, but rather than computer guidance or remote piloting there were men and boys flying the planes into the warships. Some newer ships could withstand direct hits like the one above, where it appears a pilot and aircraft were lost for no gain, some older converted ships were devastated by a single kamakaze hit. They would employ swarms of these planes against larger high value targets like aircraft carriers and battleships. The anti aircraft fire from these ships would often ignite the Japanese aircraft causing further deveststion upon impact.
