If that's your doctor's actual attitude, you need to find another doctor. I'm not sure why a doctor would object to you being an active participant in your own healthcare.
I recall reading articles where customers would actually be really obnoxious about their discoveries. I think as a person in general, if people came up to you and said anything along the lines of "my Internet searches supercede your degree, now give me the medicine I divined from my own uninformed journey," I would imagine that you would be pretty pissed too.
I mean, I'm all for being active about your own health, but I myself would be concerned if my self diagnosis was unsubstantiated or too extreme. You can diagnose yourself with anything, you just need the right symptoms and the right sources that give vague enough info about the whole shebang. On the other hand, most doctors are careful enough to investigate until they have enough information to deliver a diagnosis.

And who might be the ones writing articles online about symptoms, doctors?
