Not true =) it actually has Germanic origins, and came from the word puss, which is related to cat. Later on it was used to describe sweet women and also gentle men (and so eventually became an insult.) Pusillanimous, on the other hand, has French origins from the word pussilanime, which means small and insignificant :)
