Its also very commonly used to refer to anything living you ride on, in particular in gaming. It is obvious which is being referred to here.

the word mount is not just used for anything living you ride on. you too say mount to stuff like a motorbike or other non living stuff. it's just a word you use if you ride something. the word mount is often used in mmorpg's etc. - and that's why i put it in the title. because the small doggy is riding the big doggy like a mount.
