Thing is, kid leashes are kinda awesome. Gives the kid freedom to walk where they want to and look at shit and the parent can easily find their own kid and vice versa. It's a good thing for independence when the kid isn't quite old enough to be completely on their own yet.

I was a leash kid and I'm probably alive today because of it. I was a runner and tried to run into roads on several occasions, as well as running around any store we went to.

My kid used to be a runner and I was too stubborn to just get a leash for him. In hindsight it would have saved a lot of stress.

My big sister wasn’t really just a runner, she was too friendly also. She’d never met a stranger. So she’d run off and make “friends” with random people. My mom got a leash because she was scared my sister was going to get kidnapped.
