don't know, but i think the idea is that he learns that he don't need to fear strangers because they are nice to him, and if he only barks because fears strangers.. he would maybe stop to bark at strangers. but like you said it could backfire i think.

My neighbor tried something like this with the idiot's behind us. She would constantly give the idiot's dog treats to stop it from barking, something it would do from dawn to around 11 pm everyday. After about 30 minutes of incessant barking without receiving a treat the dog would begin howling. If you're aware of the problem with YOUR dog, YOU correct the problem. Don't rely on your neighbors or strangers to fix your dog.
