From what I understand, it would've been even worse if they hadn't flushed Lake Okeechobee.

Tons of algae buildup from both natural and man-made sources (the heavy rains has triggered an early algae bloom that is also being fueled by runoff from commercial farming and urban development). That lake is the lifeblood of South Florida and if they didn't release some of that algae, everything in the entire lake would've suffocated from the slimy water.

Oh nasty, sucks it even got to that point but I guess the mixture of events couldn't be helped. Hopefully the damage doesn't escalate.

Actually, it could have been helped somewhat if we stopped using certain fertilizers.

That's very true, lots of things could be changed these days to benefit the environment. It's going slowly but the world is changing, a little too late imo but at least things are starting to change.
