(I'm hoping that wasn't a regular occurrence as no record should actually do that unless the record or needle is damaged)

Actually thats not a problem at all, not for the needle and not for the record of course. It's called a locked loop and that cracking noise is just an audio signal like all the others. There's even locked loops with audio information in them. Of course it's wearing off the needle like any use does.
That's in fact a regular occurence when two circumstances are given: a really professional, high end turntable (like a Thorens) which doesn't have a lift-off function plus an inebriated listener falling asleep or being so blitzed s/he won't even bother.
That's really cool I didn't know that. I always knew it as an issue with the record or the tracking force being off and as mines an old semi-automatic H.M.V record player I don't have that scratch at the end.
And then laying in bed exhausted and half asleep covering your ears for like and hour and a half trying to convince yourself you dont have to get up and that you can sleep through it
