Why is there a g in ghoti if it could be pronounced just like fish?

There's a "g" in night because it's still spelt the Middle English way the word was pronounced. As the printing press got going the spelling was preserved while the pronunciation was not. No say "night" with the hard "g" and you're speaking like they did eight hundred years ago.
