Convert Iron ore to gold ore and use that. It gives you more experience. Plus if you've completed No Stone Unturned, you can get a ton of gems that will further increase your exp gain.
I was going to go under the map and steal from the White Run chest and make a shit ton of nails. If you make anything in hearthfire you get a lot of xp.
