They're hard to compare. I'm not a huge fan of LOTR because it's rather restrictive on its rules with magic and the timeline is really well established, so you can't screw around as much. Star Wars on the other hand, has pretty much the opposite problem, with incredible storytelling potential, a huge toolbox of things to write about, but the rules about a lot of stuff regarding Jedis and the Force are a little too fluid, changing a lot per each work.
One more reason I hate the new Star Wars movies as well, they throw so many established aspects known about the Force under the bus.
