I absolutely couldn't tell you the last time I jumped up as a means of travel. I have definitely bounced in place (dancing) I have jumped down plenty of times, and it's not exactly weird to jump over something. Maybe part of this is I like to go hiking, and jumping small chasms or creeks is a lit easier than trying to find a path around.
But most people I know (myself definitely included) can't jump high enough to land any higher than their feet could step, so jumping up is an activity that is only reach useful for humans to grab something. I'm tall enough that this is a rare event for me. I have definitely witnessed my roommate jump in order to reach items on a shelf that was too high for her.
In video games, taking a large step up isn't really an option. The animation would definitely be awkward and it wouldn't feel as good as jumping. Some video games also let you jump higher than real life people can step. In real life, you would have to climb that.
