It's called Parthenogenesis (Virgin Birth) and while rare, its not completely unheard of

It would only lead to female babies anyway... so not helpful for future reproduction

Except the offspring were also more likely to capable of reproducing through parthenogenesis, meaning the species would continue to propagate, but even more efficiently because they could continue even in the absence of males.
