If you Truly want to make a difference, serve @ a soup kitchen once a week, month, whenever. Go to/call local nursing homes & ask if you can read, play board/card games w/ the residents. Me & a bunch of friends made Christmas cookies & asked if there was anyone that wouldn't receive gifts because they had no family or were dumped there & forgotten. The littlest gifts brought both smiles & tears to these lonely people. Just one little gesture...
Yeah, you'll find that a lot of homeless people are like that, but you usually don't see them unless you do stuff like that. I used to tutor homeless kids at the shelter, as part of my psychology requirement. I ended up staying longer than I needed to, because I enjoyed it. Then next semester, my classes were harder, so I had to stop.
Anywho, the people were great there. It's the ones begging on the street to support their habit that tend to be assholes.
