There is actually a completely sound set of rules for why these two words don't rhyme. Baked is a one syllable word comprising of a base word "bake" and a suffix "-ed". "Bake" follows basic pronunciation rules (the 'e' at the end controls the vowel 'a', giving it the long sound because it is preceded by a 'k' which follows the "e, i, or y" rule) and the suffix "-ed" can be pronounced as /ed/, /d/, or /t/ based on the preceding letter. As "bake" ends in an 'e', we follow the rule of removing the final 'e' to add the suffix, making 'k' the preceding letter which means that 'ed' will be pronounced as /t/. This means that the sounds of this word are /b/ /ā/ /k/ /t/. In contrast, "naked" is a multisyllabic word following a vcv pattern for division. We divide the syllable after the 'a' and before the 'k', meaning the first syllable is 'na' which would be an open syllable as it ends in a vowel. This syllable's sounds are /n/ /ā/. The second syllable 'ked' is a traditional closed syllable,
meaning the 'e' makes its short sound /e/. The second syllable has the sounds /k/ /e/ /d/. Thus, "baked" and "naked" do not rhyme based on logic and simple rules that many should learn early on.
As a side note, I asked my class today to explain why these words don't rhyme and they recalled all of these rules from our lessons this year so I am surprised more people don't know this....
