Not necessarily, it's more so when there are other instances of that figure actually showing attraction to the same or both sexes. Letters, journals, dairies, etc.

Or Sappho writing all those poems about ladies and having sex with them as straight?

Gay people are not modern invention, they have been around since the dawn of time. And that's where the problem lies, people assuming that everyone in history was straight. Or alternatively that Ancient Greece and Rome was filled with only dudes boning each other, these are all such broad blanket statements for something so individual.

I disagree, gays are a new invention, my gay friend's firmware just got updated to the new 2.0.1 version. It's fine but he still cannot run straight though. Just kidding, you're spot on.
