The reason martinis are stirred is to not crack the ice and water down the martini. This would get you the taste of watery vermouth as good vodka has little taste (compared to the gin of a conventional martini) and the broken ice from such shaking would water down the drink horribly.

Exactly. I read Bond intentionally did that to water down his alcohol so he wouldn't be as intoxicated that quickly. But the man drank so damn much.....
