I find myself playing for achievments all the time. Not buying games to get achievements, just trying to get them all on the games I like. It adds a challenge. But I know exactly what you mean.

I grew up doing that with all my games, especially the old Final Fantasies and Legend of Zeldas. I'd replay them over and over, trying to get all the secret stuff and essentially "100%" the games.

Yeah, me too. Final Fantasy 10 was one of them, as well as GTA Vice City and a few others that were just so good you had to get 100% completetion.
