I saw Genesis live in Hamburg in the early 1980s after they had their first major hits with Phil Collins as front man. I went there to see their support act (King Crimson, who were super great) and stayed to see Genesis as well. While I didn't ever care too much for them, I thought wth, I paid for the whole show, so why not. I was underwhelmed, as expected. Their old stuff was never my thing, the new stuff even less. All around me there were old Hippies in their late 40s to 50s who had clearly followed the band for many years. Most of them looked sad and confused, many had tears in their eyes and could fucking believe what they saw: Phil Collins in a white suit, totally stage-hogging and not even playing drums all the time. It was totally unreal... kiddies hotting it off to some charts music and those poor old geezers who clearly didn't feel like being in the right place. It even kinda got worse when Collins sang the old stuff, that Gabriel used to perform. Complete mess.
