She has been "dead" for several months now without any food or drink, how can you explain that (except that she was in a very deep state of "hybernation").
I think this demonstrates quite well the difference between british and american humour. Americans take things more literally, so they are horrified by the thought of the story. However British people can see the funny side as the story doesn't end the way they expected, and that is funny. Also this story sounds very much like a monty python sketch.
