The problem is lack of education. If these people knew the importance of protection, (if people would teach them, instead of preaching abstinence) then they could go to college, become educated, and get out of poverty as well.

Why should you wait until marriage? If you aren't religious that is? If both of you do not have STDs and use protection, what is wrong?

Well the thing is that protection is not always effective, actually it's estimated about an 85% success rate, and it will do nothing against STIs, which are surprisingly common and many of which have no outward signs.
