I also here more about pets being left in cars in comparison to kids. I've heard about it of course, but not nearly as much as I have heard about pets, dogs especially, dying of excessive heat because they were left in the car.
Unless the child is really young (like unable to crawl yet) they also have a means of getting out before they die from heat exhaustion. A pet does not (unless they are extremely talented at opening doors).
Not saying its worse when a pet dies than a human, just saying I think its worse when they have absolutely no means of getting out of the car to prevent it
Living in Florida we have a bunch of deaths human and animal per year simply because idiots don't realize that a car still heats up in the winter when the sun is shining on it.

Once at Wal-Mart I saw a car with all windows rolled up with a dog inside. I called the cops and they told me to do whatever means to get the dog that was obviously suffering out. My dad is a mechanic, so he has lots of tools in his truck and 10 minutes later all the windows were broken and I gained a new friend (I was working at a shelter at the time and when they brought the dog in I adopted immediately).
Anyone willing to go all out, and I'm talking about breaking ALL the windows when one would suffice, to save a helpless animal/child from a locked car deserves a high five.
And a cake.
Please tell me you didn't neglect the windshield.
