Im 16 so this may not be totally right but here it goes...
When you move into a rental property you pay a deposit to make sure that you won't damage the property, if it is damaged when you move out you do not receive the deposit back.

Close. It is not to make sure you won't damage the property, it is to make sure any damages incurred are covered.
