This idea has actually helped me make great strides toward overcoming my arachnophobia. I am not yet at a "touch them" place, but I don't have to leave the room anymore.

At first it helped me too, but then I think of spider bites, poisonous spiders, spider eggs, and spider webs, then I remember why I have arachnophobia in the first place.

With the shower thing, once a moth was in the shower and I threw a bar of soap at it, but it didn't move! Then I shouted, "I'M NUDE!" and it flew away.
